Instant Watch Pick of the Week: Doctor Who
On October 21, after hearing about this spectacular show for months on Facebook, I decided to sit down and watch Doctor Who. For those who aren’t in the know, Doctor Who is a science fiction show filmed in the United Kingdom and aired on BBC. It tells the tale of The Doctor, the last member of a race called the Time Lords from the planet Gallifrey. Due to incidents somewhat fleshed out through the series, he is the lone survivor of a great battle called the Time War. The Doctor has gone through eleven different incarnations in its 48 years, only going off the air twice; once between 1989-1996, and once again from 1996-2005. Netflix Instant Streaming has some of the older movies, but it has the TV series from 2005-2010, and I expect they’ll have Series 6 when Series 7 kicks off on BBC and BBC America.
The current incarnation of the show began with Christopher Eccleston (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) as the Doctor and Billie Piper as his companion Rose Tyler. Eccleston left the show after Series One and David Tennant (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) took the role from Series Two to the end of the Series Four Specials, and he was joined by Piper as well. When Piper left after Series Two, Freema Agyeman took over the companion role as Martha Jones. She left after Series Three and was replaced by Catherine Tate as Donna Noble in Series Four. Series Five has Matt Smith as the Doctor and Karen Gillian as his companion Amy Pond.
Like I said, I’ve been watching for a little over two months, and I must say, it got me from Series One, Episode 1. I’m currently at Series Four, but I’m almost done with it and ready for Series Five. The show is a combination of witty, funny, droll, and sometimes a bit freaky, but I highly recommend it.
As the Tenth Doctor says, “Allons-y!”
