Deserted Island: The Sports Edition
We all have movies we love to watch. Most people can pick out at least 5 movies that if they were stranded on an island they would take with them. I just cant do that. There are just too many damn choices out there. So I decided to break it down, over the next few weeks we are going to look at some of my favorite films(and their trailers) from the different genres. So lets look at today’s movies, sports films.
5. The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh
I think right off the break I am giving you guys a movie that makes you think “WTF”? I found and heard about this movie from my mom. She made me watch it when I was younger and I do believe we wore the VHS player out with this one. This movie premiered in 1979 and starred “Dr. J” Julius Erving and Meadowlark Lemon. Simple basketball movie about the struggling fictional team the Pittsburgh Pythons, and in a desperate move the team comes up with a unique concept, compose a team of players all from the same astrological sign. The idea seems crazy at first but the ragtag group of players eventually become a powerhouse and win the championship. This is a silly ass movie, but its enjoyable. The 1970-80′s soundtrack carries it and you know what I will watch it gladly over and over.
4. Happy Gilmore
I am sure that this film can fit into 2 different categories. This is probably the only Adam Sandler movie I can watch over and over. Sandler plays Happy Gilmore, a terrible hockey player who finds out that his ability to hit a hockey puck translates well into the sport of golf. In order to save his grandmother’s house he becomes a pro golfer and turns the golf world upside down at the same time. Even today this movie still holds up very well. The jokes are still funny and it has hilarious cameos by some well known people(hello there Bob barker). It just works well. Think of other movies based on the sport of golf… *waits*…….. *waits*…… There you have it. A good comedy thats also a great feel good movie by the time it ends.
3. The Karate Kid
This is another film that could go into a different category. I choose this as a sports film because martial arts is a sport. Do not argue this with me, you will be wrong. A young Daniel LaRusso travels across the country with his mother to California. He hates it there and kids bully the hell out of him with their “karate”. One night while getting his ass beat he is rescued by the maintenance man of his apartment complex, Mr. Miyagi, who happens to know karate. He then agrees to teach Daniel in order for him to face his bullies at a tournament. I enjoy this movie because I could identify with Daniel, and many could. The way he learns karate and discipline was an awesome concept. It is a staple movie from the 80′s and this is a movie that you cant ignore when its on TV. On a more personal note, the song playing during the final montage of fights at the end(You’re the best…. AROUND) is a classic….
2. Friday Night Lights
This is based on true events and follows the story of the Perriman High 1988 football season. I was torn between this movie and “Remember the Titans”. This won over due to the fact that it was based on more factual events then the latter movie. This movie hits home with a lot of people. Not because of how it ends but because of what happens with the players. Family members providing pressure on the kid to play well, dealing with injuries that end a players career, players who have to overcome fears to play well, and the inside politics of high school football. This movie is one of the highest rated sports films out there and also spawned a television series of the same name. Can’t go wrong with this one.
1. Rocky IV
Lets be honest, the “Rocky” movies are great(except for 5). Its hard to choose just one. I was really flip flopping between this one and number 2 for this list. I ultimately went with 4 because to me it was the more emotional of the films. Rocky is retired and his good friend Apollo Creed can’t shake the itch to fight again. Along comes super Russian Ivan Drago, who in a match, kills Apollo, Rocky then travels to Russia to defend his friends honor and takes a fight with Drago. Out of all the movies, this Rocky movie is easily the most quoted and most watched out of my group of friends. The training montage and soundtrack is perfect and makes me want to go throw on the gloves and do the damn thing. Again this is another movie that if you don’t enjoy it, you are a terrorist of a communist and I will report you to the highest authority…..
